Canine Quandary

I've never had a long-haired dog before. One minute, he's perfectly clean, brushed, and presentable. And the next minute, he's dirty and matted. Is there anything I can do to get mats (I don't even know if I'm spelling that correctly, that's how inexperienced I am at this) out, without having to pull at them forever, cut them out, or run him to the groomers every five minutes?

I've never had a boy dog either. I definitely had my reservations. It hasn't been a big deal at all, but I am kinda puzzled by something. I've always known male dogs to hike their leg when they pee. But Freddie just kinda stands real still, and has a nearly imperceptible shimmy as he goes. It makes it hard to know if he's done his business or not. I guess I don't really have a question here, other than wondering if he's got company in the I'd-rather-not-hike-my-leg-when-I-pee club. And I really can't complain; at least he's not humping everything in site or whatever else boy dogs are notorious for doing.

Maybe Sasha can teach your boy dog how to hike his leg like she does. She will also mount your leg on occasion, but we don't want to teach FRE that.

Is he an indoor dog and still gets dirty and matted that quickly? You might want to keep an eye out for what J and C and dumping on him. :-)

Actually, using a good dog food can do wonders for the dog's coat. We use Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul. Corny name, but good food and Sasha has a gorgeous coat. At first we tried Nutro Natural Choice Lamb & Rice. Sasha did not tolerate the lamb protien very well, but her coat really improved while on it.

yeah, the boys do tend to help get the dog dirty, but perhaps a better word choice would have been stinky.

he's totally an indoor dog, but he goes outside for "business." in just a few minutes, he manages to get really stinky--like he's been out there for hours.

We cut out a mat once and ended up at the vet getting stitches.

Dodge doesn't lift his leg either. I think there's something about how soon they get neutered on whether or not that lift, but I really don't know.
