Let's Do Lunch

I've hit the wall when it comes to lunch around here. Like in a we-only-had-popcorn-and-pudding-in-our-tummies-for-hours-today-until-I-finally-convinced-the-kids-to-eat-a-few-bites-of-leftover-fried-chicken kind of hitting the wall. Because I have been relying on a rotation of three or four things, and the boys are sick of them (and frankly so am I).

So, what do you feed your kids for lunch (or for those who don't have kids, do you remember what you ate for lunch during your childhood)? I'm going for healthy, relatively easy to prepare stuff if possible.

I'm really looking forward to reading your thoughts and ideas!

  1. I am sure you do some of this already..
    Grilled cheese
turkey and crackers (rowin calls this his lunchable)
    turkey sandwiches
    cheese quesidilla
corndogs (not that healthy, but yummy)
    easy mac
    hot dogs (the light version)
    lipton noodles (variety of flavors)
    pb and j
    pb and honey
and banana smunchers (mix up banana and pb and smooth onto graham crackers and freeze for a few hours)

  2. I think Sue makes fun colored pancakes sometimes...

my mom used to make peanut butter and jelly rolls, where she would cut off the crusts, spread a piece of bread w/ PB OR Jelly and then roll it up and slice it (so that you ended up with little rolls kind of like cinnamon rolls - does that make any sense?)

she also did the celery and PB with raisins or celery and cream cheese, or apples and PB, which are kind of snacky I guess, but we loved it. =)

plus she just "fancied up" our regular sandwiches by cutting them into fun shapes with big cookie cutters

we also ate a lot of applesauce and mac'n'cheese with hotdogs. (or leftover taco meat)

    that's all I can remember... =)

  3. We usually do sandwiches and stuff like that. Maybe mac and cheese, stuff like that, but we only do lunch on weekends otherwise my older son has a packed lunch and Bennett at his grandparents eats whatever they are having.

  4. Quite often we just do boiled eggs and blackberries. Sofie doesn't like egg yolks so I will let her have two or three eggs whites (since the cholesterol is in the yolk and the protein in the white). I'm usually satisfied if she has had a little protein.
I also freeze little quiches (in which I hide vegetables) and turkey meatloaf because I can pull them out when I'm pressed for time.
Frozen cheese ravioli works for us too. We had a brand here that looks pretty healthy.
I feel your pain. I tend to offer the same things over and over and worry a little about the lack of variety. Good luck! Pam

  6. lunch, do they really need it everyday? haha

    frozen pizza
    hot ham & cheese sandwiches
    ramen noodels
    corn dog/tots or fries
turkey slices, cheddar cheese & apples
    hot dogs
    grilled cheese/tomato soup
    mcd's dollar menu
    little caesar's pizza
leftovers (that means i gotta cook the night before, but i love when we can have leftovers for lunch)

usually everyday around 11:59am i'm like, dang, it's lunchtime again, what are we gonna do today?!?!

  7. I always try to get a protein, fruit, veggie, and grain if I can (on most days that we're home--if we're out, it's a different story!). I buy canned food a lot just b/c it is easy, but this is what their lunch looks like:

    Protein and Grain:
    PB&J sandwich
    PB& Honey Sandwich
    Turkey and Cheese Roll-Up
    Grilled Cheese Sandwich

    Fruit:
    Canned fruit--all varieties
    Grapes
    Strawberries
    Blueberries (whatever is in season!)
    Applesauce (natural)

    Veggies:
    Canned carrots
    Green beans
    Peas
    Baby Carrots--fresh

If I buy canned fruit or veggies, I will try to only buy the fruit in juice-not syrup, and the veggies with no added salt or sugar. I've found that Libby's brand is the same price as the Walmart generic.

Snacks are usually animal crackers, dried cranberries, nuts, etc.

  8. Well my supper, is yall's lunch. With my husband's work schedule, I cook my big meal for lunch, and then we go light for supper. It is pretty pitiful, too.

    Hot dogs
    pizza
fishsticks (those 3 are if I have been to the store recently)

otherwise, Ramen noodles, Mac and Cheese, Potatoes, soup, and a lot of sandwiches and cereal. wow, huh?

  9. We do sandwiches ALL THE TIME...is that bad?! I'm feeling a little uncreative after reading all the other comments. Also whatever fruit we have on hand and baby carrots a lot of times. Sometimes leftovers. Sometimes turkey dogs. I'm gonna try those pb&j roll ups...the boys would think that's fun! ;)
